Bretxa Public Market

The Bretxa Public Market features a long, neoclassical facade with high stone arches that once opened directly onto the sea. Fishermen used to dock their small boats at these very arches to haul their daily catch into the stalls. In eighteen seventy, the city drained the surrounding water to expand the town, and the market became a permanent fixture of San Sebastian. Today, the building houses a modern shopping center, but the lower level maintains the traditional fish markets and local produce stalls.
