Donostia-San Sebastián City Hall

The Donostia-San Sebastián City Hall occupies a building that began its life in eighteen eighty-seven as a grand casino. Its facade remains crowded with white stone carvings and distinct, arched balconies overlooking the bay. When gambling became illegal in Spain during the nineteen twenties, the city government moved its offices here from the old town. A stray shell from a cannon hit the building during the Spanish Civil War, leaving behind a pockmark in the stone that the architects decided to keep.
