Sir Ralph Abercromby

A bronze figure of Sir Ralph Abercromby stands atop a tall stone plinth in the center of the square. This general holds a telescope in his left hand, his gaze fixed toward the horizon. Sculptor Richard Westmacott cast the statue in eighteen twenty-seven to commemorate Abercromby’s death in Egypt during the Napoleonic Wars. The bronze was salvaged from captured French cannons. Decades later, workers moved the heavy memorial several times, finally settling it here to anchor the quiet park among the buildings.
