Coffee Yard is defined by a narrow, medieval alleyway that twists sharply between stone walls and overhanging timber-framed jetties. It remains one of the few surviving snickelways in York, functioning as a cramped pedestrian shortcut that once connected the busy markets to the quieter back gardens of merchants. In the fourteen hundreds, this path served as a private passage for residents, protecting them from the mud and noise of the main streets. It is now a quiet cut through the city.
