St Michael Le Belfrey

The west front of Saint Michael le Belfrey features a striking, irregular pattern of grey stonework that sets it apart from the smooth ashlar of the neighboring minster. This sixteenth century church stands directly against the massive scale of the cathedral, a deliberate choice by parish leaders who wanted their own independent space. Guy Fawkes, the man who attempted to blow up Parliament in sixteen oh five, was baptized here. His name remains in the parish register, written in a cramped, ordinary hand.
