St Olave's Church sits near the ruins of Saint Mary's Abbey, distinguished by its sturdy, dark stone tower and the distinctive stepped battlements along the roofline. Dedicated to the Norwegian king Olaf the Saint, it holds the title of the oldest church in York still in use. During the English Civil War, the building suffered damage when royalist troops used the roof as a platform for cannons to fire at parliamentarian forces, who had taken shelter in the nearby abbey ruins.
