Ye Olde Starre Inne bears a timber-framed facade that leans slightly toward the street, anchored by a prominent, carved wooden sign hanging above the alleyway entrance. Local records date the building to sixteen forty-four, though the cellars below reach much further back. During the English Civil War, Royalist officers used the upper rooms as a headquarters, while the wounded were treated in the basement. Soldiers carved their names into the cellar beams, where some initials remain etched into the dark, heavy wood today.
