York's Chocolate Story

museum

York’s Chocolate Story sits behind a bright, cherry-red storefront on King’s Square. This museum occupies the former site of the Rowntree factory offices, where families like the Rowntrees and Terrys once turned York into the chocolate capital of England. Joseph Rowntree started as a grocer, but his accidental discovery of a recipe for a cocoa bean processing machine launched a global enterprise. Thousands of local workers spent their lives here perfecting the KitKat and the Chocolate Orange before production moved away.
