Yorkshire Museum

The Yorkshire Museum sits within the Museum Gardens, distinguished by its stark, neo-classical Greek revival facade of pale ashlar stone. It was built in eighteen thirty to house the collection of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society, who gathered fossils and local archaeological finds after a massive excavation at Saint Mary's Abbey. During the digging, laborers uncovered a Roman burial chamber holding a perfectly preserved glass jug and a ring still resting on a finger bone.
