Kelly’s Cellars features a rough, whitewashed stone exterior that stands out against the brickwork of the surrounding street. Built in seventeen twenty, it remains one of the oldest public houses in Belfast. During the seventeen ninety-eight rebellion, Henry Joy McCracken hid in the cellar beneath these floorboards to escape capture by British soldiers. His sister, Mary Ann, managed to get food to him while he was tucked away in the darkness. The bar still occupies that same ground-floor space today.
