Sawers is a tall, narrow building on Fountain Street with a distinctive black and gold facade. It opened in eighteen ninety-seven as a gourmet food store. John Sawer founded the business to bring exotic ingredients like truffles, spices, and fine cheeses to Belfast, items that were previously unheard of in the city. The store became a destination for local chefs and wealthy residents. It survives today by maintaining that same inventory of hard-to-find global ingredients behind its original wooden storefront.
