Aluminaire House

The Aluminaire House is a three-story stack of corrugated aluminum and glass, shimmering like a translucent box in the desert heat. Architects Albert Frey and Lawrence Kocher built this structure for a nineteen thirty-one exhibition in New York. They wanted to prove that mass-produced metal could provide affordable, modern housing. When the exhibition ended, the house was auctioned for a thousand dollars, moved to a farm on Long Island, and eventually turned into a chicken coop before its rescue and move to Palm Springs.
