Pier 80 stretches along the San Francisco waterfront with massive, flat concrete berths and expansive warehouses that dwarf the shipping containers stacked nearby. This site served as the Port of San Francisco’s primary container terminal during the late nineteen sixties, built specifically to handle the transition to modern shipping technology. It replaced the old finger piers of the Embarcadero, which lacked the space for trucks to maneuver. Today, it remains a working industrial landscape where heavy machinery still moves freight across the docks.
