The Aloha Monster is a sprawling, multi-colored concrete sculpture that anchors the main entrance of the Ala Moana Center. Its thick, winding forms snake across the plaza, finished in a distinctive palette of primary blues, yellows, and reds. Sculptor Edward Brownlee cast the piece in nineteen sixty-eight, when the shopping center sought a focal point for its expansion. He designed the abstract, tubular shapes to encourage children to climb and crawl through the work, turning the plaza into a kinetic public playground.
