The Princess Victoria Kamāmalu Building features a distinctive, heavy concrete facade with deep-set, recessed windows that create a rhythmic shadow across its exterior. Built in nineteen thirty-nine, this structure served as the original federal building for the territory of Hawaii. It stands on the site of the former home of Princess Victoria Kamāmalu, a high-ranking member of the Hawaiian royalty. The design choice to use local basalt stone honors the traditional landscape while housing the machinery of territorial governance.
