The Iolani Palace features a deep red roof and elaborate, cream-colored Italianate stone walls that distinguish it from every other building in Honolulu. It served as the official residence for the final monarchs of the Kingdom of Hawaii. King Kalakaua moved into these halls in eighteen eighty-two, filling them with the latest electricity and indoor plumbing. When his successor, Queen Liliuokalani, was placed under house arrest in an upstairs bedroom during the eighteen ninety-five coup, she spent her days quilting.
