Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii

The Izumo Taishakyo Mission of Hawaii features a distinct, octagonal wooden sanctuary topped with a sweeping, dark green tile roof that curls upward at the corners. Built in nineteen twenty-three, this structure serves as a branch of the Izumo Grand Shrine in Japan. During the Second World War, authorities seized the building and interned its priest, Morito Tashiro. He eventually returned to the site after the war, reclaiming the space for the community and restoring its role in local religious life.
