The Iolani Barracks features high, coral-block walls and a steep, pointed roof that distinguishes it from the surrounding palace grounds. King Kalakaua ordered its construction in eighteen seventy-one to house his personal guard. The building served as a military barracks for over a decade, but it eventually lost its purpose when the monarchy was overthrown. In nineteen sixty-five, workers disassembled the structure stone by stone and moved it to its current location to accommodate expansion of the nearby Capitol building.
