The Cathedral Basilica of Our Lady of Peace features coral block walls quarried from the Honolulu harbor reef. When construction began in eighteen forty-three, workers shaped these porous stones by hand to build the oldest Catholic church in continuous use in the United States. Father Damien, who spent his life serving those with leprosy on Molokai, received his holy orders inside this sanctuary in eighteen sixty-four. His presence remains tied to the history of these walls.
