Historic Kamehameha V Post Office Building

The Kamehameha the Fifth Post Office wears a facade of heavy, rusticated concrete blocks that look remarkably like natural coral stone. Built in eighteen seventy-one, it served as the kingdom's central hub for mail and government business. When laborers finished the walls, they realized the wet climate would destroy the soft native sandstone originally chosen for the exterior. They coated the building in a mix of sand and lime to mimic granite instead, a choice that still gives it a rugged, fortress-like silhouette.
