Keli'iponi Hale: The Coronation Pavilion

The Coronation Pavilion features a distinctive octagonal roof supported by eight white pillars, set apart from the surrounding palace grounds. King Kalakaua commissioned this structure for his eighteen eighty-three coronation ceremony, nine years after he actually took the throne. When the royal couple finally processed to this spot, the King placed the crown on his own head, then crowned Queen Kapiolani. The structure serves as the official site for the investiture of Hawaiian royalty, maintaining its precise original shape and placement.
