Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park

Mother Waldron Neighborhood Park centers on a wide, grassy lawn framed by a low, curved concrete wall that mimics the lines of an amphitheater. Named for Margaret Waldron, a woman who spent the Great Depression feeding the hungry children of the Kakaako district from her own kitchen, the land became a community playground in nineteen thirty-nine. Neighborhood residents pushed the city to preserve the space as a public park, securing it against development that eventually swallowed the rest of their original homes.
