Tomb of King Lunalilo

The coral block walls of the Lunalilo Mausoleum sit tucked within the grounds of Kawaiahao Church, identifiable by their thick, stark white masonry and iron gates. William Charles Lunalilo, Hawaii's first elected monarch, refused burial among the royal tombs at Mauna Ala. He wanted to rest among his people instead. When he died in eighteen seventy-four, his remains were brought here, where they still lie beneath a heavy stone slab, flanked by the constant, low-hanging shadows of the church eaves.
