Kapuāiwa Building

The Kapuāiwa Building stands out for its thick, masonry walls finished in coral block and lava rock. Built in eighteen seventy-four, it served as the office for the government of the Kingdom of Hawaii. King Kamehameha the Fifth commissioned the structure to house his ministers. He named it after his own birth name, Kapuāiwa. The building functioned as the administrative heart of the monarchy, housing the Land Office and the Treasury until the overthrow of the kingdom in eighteen ninety-three.
