Maunakea Marketplace sits behind a wide, tiled courtyard where the roofline dips into a traditional Chinese-style pagoda peak. It occupies the site of the former Mendonca Building, a structure that survived the great Chinatown fire of nineteen hundred. When developers cleared the block in the late eighties, they imported artisans from Guangzhou to construct the ornate, red-tiled entrance. Today, the marketplace houses a dense grid of stalls, serving everything from roast duck to local plate lunches to residents and passing workers.
