Utica Street remains paved with original granite cobblestones that once groaned under the weight of horse-drawn carts. When the city leveled the area to expand the rail yards in the eighteen nineties, they built these massive brick warehouses to hold textiles and leather goods. Workers packed crates onto wagons here, moving goods directly from the nearby South Station platforms. The street sits silent now, but the uneven, heavy stones still show the wear of millions of iron-rimmed wheels rolling toward the docks.
