Elephant Room

The Elephant Room sits below street level, marked by a simple wooden sign above a set of stairs leading into a basement. Its walls are exposed limestone, worn and damp, while the low ceiling keeps the acoustics tight around the small stage. For decades, musicians have navigated these narrow stairs to play jazz seven nights a week. A flood in nineteen eighty-one nearly wiped it out, but the owners hauled the mud out by hand to keep the music playing.
