The Driskill rises above the corner of Brazos and Sixth streets with its heavy, arched limestone masonry and circular corner turret. Colonel Jesse Driskill built this hotel in eighteen eighty-six to prove that Austin deserved a grand palace of cattle-baron luxury. He spent four hundred thousand dollars on the project, but within a year, he lost the property in a high-stakes poker game. The hotel changed hands before it ever finished a full year under his name, leaving the Colonel broke.
