The Texas Governor’s Mansion features six massive, fluted Corinthian columns supporting a double-story porch that spans the entire front facade. Built in eighteen fifty-six, the Greek Revival house has served as the official home for every Texas governor since Elisha Pease. In nineteen oh nine, Sam Houston Junior, the son of the famous Texas hero, set fire to the mansion while his mother was inside. The elderly woman famously climbed down a rope ladder to escape the burning building unharmed.
