The Millett Opera House sits on the corner of East Ninth and Trinity streets, easily identified by the thick, rough-cut limestone blocks that form its heavy exterior. Built in eighteen seventy-eight by Charles Millett, a businessman who arrived in Austin with grand plans, the building hosted touring theater troupes, traveling lecturers, and local galas for decades. When the curtain finally fell on the theater business, the space served as a lodge for the Odd Fellows and a storage facility for the state government.
