Saint Mary Catholic Cathedral

The Saint Mary Catholic Cathedral features distinct, jagged-edged limestone walls that rise above the corner of East Tenth Street and Brazos. It serves as the mother church for the Austin diocese. In eighteen seventy-two, Irish laborers hauled the stone from local quarries to build this structure. During construction, the lead architect famously resigned after a heated argument with the bishop over the roofline, forcing the parish to finish the building themselves with the blueprints they had on hand.
