Old Bakery and Emporium

The Old Bakery and Emporium sits at the corner of Congress Avenue and East Ninth Street, identified by its rugged limestone walls and the tall, narrow arched windows. Swedish immigrant Charles Lundberg built the limestone structure in eighteen seventy-four. He operated his bakery on the ground floor while his family lived upstairs. During the nineteen-sixties, the city bought the building to demolish it for a parking lot, but residents fought to save the site, eventually securing its place on the National Register.
