Milam Park occupies the site of the old San Pedro Cemetery, where settlers and soldiers were buried during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. When the city moved to develop the land in the nineteen thirties, crews unearthed hundreds of graves, shifting remains to other cemeteries to make way for the public space. Today, a stone cenotaph stands near the center of the lawn, marking the spot where the forgotten residents of early San Antonio once rested in the earth.
