Arneson River Theatre

The Arneson River Theatre features curved stone steps that drop directly into the San Antonio River, acting as a natural auditorium built into the bank. Robert Hugman designed it in nineteen thirty-nine, using laborers from the Works Progress Administration to hand-cut the limestone. During the opening, organizers staged an elaborate production where performers arrived by boat, creating a spectacle that mimicked old Spanish fiestas. The river serves as the stage, separating the actors on the water from the audience on the grass.
