The seven hundred fifty foot concrete spire of the Tower of the Americas dominates the San Antonio skyline. Built as the theme structure for the nineteen sixty-eight World's Fair, the tower served as a centerpiece for the HemisFair event celebrating the city's two hundred fiftieth anniversary. Construction crews finished the massive project in just eighteen months, racing to complete the steel and concrete column before the fair opened. Thousands of visitors arrived here daily to ride the glass elevators to the observation deck.
