The Carl Wilhelm August Groos House features limestone walls cut from the same quarry as the Alamo. Carl Groos, a German immigrant and successful merchant, built this three-story residence in eighteen fifty-seven to showcase his prosperity. Its distinctive flat roof and classical proportions broke from the jagged, colonial styles common in San Antonio at the time. Groos once kept a pet deer in the front yard, a detail that baffled neighbors who were used to livestock and working animals roaming the streets.
