La Villita National Historic Village

La Villita is a cluster of thick-walled limestone and adobe buildings featuring enclosed courtyards and narrow, winding pathways. This area began as a collection of primitive huts for soldiers stationed at the nearby San Antonio de Valero mission. By the mid-nineteenth century, wealthy merchants occupied these homes, replacing dirt floors with wood and adding ornate details. During the nineteen thirties, the city renovated the district into an arts and crafts hub, intentionally preserving the weathered textures of the original colonial structures.
