The basement bar on Darlinghurst Road sits behind an unmarked cream door that looks like a forgotten service entrance. It is named for Dulcie Deamer, a self-styled Queen of Bohemia who held court in the nearby cafes throughout the nineteen thirties and forties. She arrived in Sydney in a leopard-skin leotard and crowned herself with a wreath of wattle at a press ball. You reach the space down a steep, narrow staircase that keeps the noise of the street firmly locked away upstairs.
