The Barrier Reef Hotel stands out on the corner of Abbott and Wharf Streets with its expansive, wrap-around timber verandas and white iron lacework. Built in nineteen twenty-six, it replaced an earlier wooden hotel that burned down during a particularly dry season. When the builders finished this version, they insisted on using fire-resistant materials, specifically brick and concrete, to protect it from a similar fate. Sailors from the nearby wharves favored the bar, marking the spot where colonial commerce met the tropical coast.
