The Pier, Cairns

The Pier in Cairns is defined by its sweeping, curved roofline of white steel, designed to mirror the sails of the yachts moored just meters away. When it opened in nineteen eighty-eight, developers intended it as a high-end retail and residential gateway to the Great Barrier Reef. Within the complex, a massive, custom-built aquarium once housed live coral displays intended to bring the underwater world to shoppers. The water pumps eventually failed, leaving the aquarium empty, and the space later became a restaurant.
