Cairns City Library

The Cairns City Library sits behind a facade of glass and grey steel, anchored by a series of prominent, vertical concrete columns that define its street presence. It occupies the former site of the town's original electricity power station, a brick building that hummed with machinery until the mid nineteen sixties. When the plant closed, city planners reclaimed the plot to house the collection. The thick foundation still rests underground, hidden beneath the modern aisles where residents now browse for books.
