Cairns Art Gallery, Mulgrave Building

The Mulgrave Shire Council building features a distinct white colonnade and a heavy arched entrance facing the street. Constructed in nineteen thirty-six, the structure served as the administrative headquarters for the local rural shire long before it became an art gallery. In the late eighties, the council moved out, leaving the building to the city. Local residents staged a fierce campaign to save the facade from demolition, ensuring the gallery could move into these rooms and preserve the original courtroom interiors.
