Citizens Gateway

The Citizens Gateway in Cairns stands as a pair of weathered concrete pillars marking the original entrance to the city wharf. These structures date back to nineteen twenty-six, serving as a formal welcome for passengers arriving by sea during the height of the region’s sugar and timber trade. A local clerk named Arthur Tresize famously insisted on their construction to lend the muddy port a sense of civic permanence. His heavy concrete arches still frame the passage where travelers once first stepped onto dry land.
