RAAF Memorial

The Royal Australian Air Force Memorial in Cairns consists of a low, curved concrete wall topped with a bronze propeller and an eagle in flight. It commemorates the pilots and ground crews who served in the Pacific theater during the second world war. In nineteen forty-two, this area hosted a major operational base for squadrons flying P-thirty-nine Airacobras. The memorial marks the exact site where thousands of service members once lived and worked before flying dangerous patrols across the Coral Sea.
