The Jack Hotel and Backpackers features a distinct, wrap-around iron balcony painted in cream and forest green that hangs over the corner of Spence and Sheridan streets. Originally built in nineteen twenty-six as the Hotel Pacific, it provided a necessary base for travelers moving through the tropical north. While the upper floors provided accommodation, the ground floor functioned as a public bar where local cane cutters and railway workers met to trade stories. It remains a fixture of the downtown Cairns streetscape today.
