The Cairns Museum sits inside the School of Arts building, marked by its distinctive two-story colonial veranda and deep, recessed wooden balconies. This building served as the cultural hub for the city starting in nineteen oh seven, housing the town library and social rooms for early settlers. When the local council threatened to demolish the structure in the nineteen seventies, residents organized a permanent picket line around the site. They occupied the porch for weeks to keep the bulldozers at bay.
