The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a four thousand eight hundred square meter saltwater swimming pool set against the mudflats of Trinity Inlet. Before two thousand three, this stretch of waterfront was largely unusable for swimming due to stinger jellyfish and saltwater crocodiles. Engineers constructed the pool to provide a safe, chlorinated swimming environment that maintains a constant flow of seawater. It holds ten million liters of water, creating a blue expanse that physically separates the city from the rising and falling tidal flats.
