Adelaide Central Market

A heavy roof of corrugated iron stretches across a full city block, sheltering the Adelaide Central Market. It opened in eighteen seventy, starting as a simple patch of land where local farmers sold vegetables from their carts. Today, hundreds of vendors crowd the aisles, selling everything from Barossa Valley cheeses to kangaroo meat. A fire destroyed much of the building in the nineteen seventies, but the stalls returned, keeping a tradition alive that began with a single basket of produce sold on the street.
