The Centre of Democracy

The Centre of Democracy occupies the Institute Building on North Terrace, easily identified by its curved, neoclassical facade and the heavy Corinthian columns guarding the entrance. It serves as a permanent space dedicated to the history of South Australia’s political life. During the nineteen eighties, this building narrowly escaped demolition when the state government planned to clear it for modern office space. A group of protestors formed a human chain around the structure, eventually forcing the government to preserve the original stone facade.
