The Adelaide Festival Centre features a sprawling, white concrete roof of interlocking geometric shapes that sits right on the bank of the River Torrens. When it opened in nineteen seventy-three, it became the first multi-purpose arts complex of its kind in Australia. During construction, the project was so bold that the premier, Don Dunstan, personally championed it to bring international theatre to the city. He once famously greeted the opening night crowd wearing a pink safari suit, marking a shift in the local culture.
